Bastion Student Create a "Sea of Pink"
On February 25, 2026, Bastion Elementary was awash in pink as students and staff came together to celebrate Pink Shirt Day, a national movement promoting kindness, acceptance, and standing up against bullying. The gym was filled with hundreds of students wearing pink as classes gathered for a school-wide assembly.
A highlight of this year’s celebration was the creation of Bastion’s large collaborative art display, proudly titled the “Sea of Pink” quilt. Each student, paired as a little buddy and big buddy, designed their own individual square. These squares were then combined to form a massive mural filled with messages of kindness, hearts, pink shirts, and colourful artwork.
The finished quilt stretched across an entire wall, showcasing the creativity and compassion of the entire school community. Hand-drawn messages such as “Be an Upstander,” “Be Kind,” and “Pink Shirt Day” anchor the centre of the mural, surrounded by hundreds of unique student designs.
During the assembly, classes gathered on the gym floor while staff members, also dressed in pink, looked on proudly. The atmosphere was one of unity, learning, and support as the school recognized the importance of speaking up, supporting one another, and building a community where everyone feels safe and valued.
Pink Shirt Day at Bastion once again served as a meaningful reminder that kindness is a choice—and one that the students and staff embraced wholeheartedly. The “Sea of Pink” quilt will remain on display, symbolizing the school’s ongoing commitment to empathy, inclusion, and standing together.
