October 17th is our individual Student Photo Day. Each class will be called down to the gym, so students can have an individual photo taken by a photographer from Mountain West Studios. On October 17th, your child will come home with a QR Code card, which will give you access to view and order photos online. The photos will be ready for viewing on Tuesday, October 25th. On the Photo Day, please ensure your child does not wear green, as this colour conflicts with the green screen background.
Additional reminders for the week:
Monday, October 17th… PAC meeting at 6:30, in the Music Room. Babysitting will be available.
Thursday, October 20th… Fun Food Lunch (please ensure orders are submitted by October 15 midnight).
Friday, October 21st… Provincial Pro-D Day – Classes will not be in session.
Student-Teacher-Family Conferences play an important role in establishing student learning goals for the year. This year, in-person Student-Teacher-Family Conferences will take place on October 26th, 2022, at all Elementary and Middle Schools in SD83. Students will not be in attendance this day, except during their scheduled conference time.
The Student-Teacher-Family conferences serve as an informal learning update (previously an “interim report”) and provide an opportunity to establish and build relationships where the student, teacher, and family collaboratively discuss meaningful goals for student growth. Areas of strength, areas for growth, and next steps will be identified for each student.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
Your child’s school will share information about how to book a conference time with your child’s teacher
Conferences will be around 15 minutes in length for each student and will be held in your child’s classroom
During the conference, opportunities will be provided to share examples of learning, reflect on areas of strength, and identify areas of further growth
Student goals may be developed as part of the conference preparation in advance and then reviewed together during the conference, or discussed and completed together at the conference
Any support required to meet the goals will also be identified during the conference
Teachers will follow-up with all parents who are unable to attend on the October 26th Conference Day (options include: scheduling a conference meeting on another day, facilitating a virtual conference using Microsoft Teams, or discussing student growth and goals over the phone)
Conferences will look and feel different based on the developmental stage and readiness of the child; for example, a student in Grade 1 may be more supported through the process than a student in Grade 8
Student voice and participation are valued at all developmental stages; teachers and families will work together to support students as needed during these conferences
The Ministry of Education and Child Care’s K to 12 Reporting Policy Framework provides an overview of the upcoming changes to the Student Reporting Policy, set to be fully implemented in the 2023/24 school year.

October 21st is a Provincial Professional Development Day. Teacher across the province will be participating in various Professional Development conferences and workshops. Classes will not be in session on this day.
October 26th is School District No. 83’s Student/Family/Teacher Conference Day. All elementary and middle schools will be participating in conferences on this day, with a similar format to what has been done in the past. There are a couple of notable changes this year, we’d like families to be aware of. Conferences are now the first informal communication about student learning/progress. This means the conference acts as an interim report to provide families with an update on how the child is doing, with a specific focus on developing an action plan for a student-centered goal. With conferences being an informal communication of student learning, the students will now receive a formal written report card in late November. The second notable change is that classes will not be in session on Wednesday, October 26th. In the past, the students have been dismissed at Lunch, with conferences taking place in the afternoon. This year, conferences will take place all day. Students will attend the conference, with their family member(s). Additional information will be provided to families soon, including a link to sign-up for Student/Family/Teacher Conferences.
October 31st is Halloween. Students and staff members are invited to wear costumes to school on Monday, October 31st. Please click on the following link to view Bastion Elementary’s guidelines for costumes: https://bas.sd83.bc.ca/2021/10/15/halloween-costume-day-2021/
