Bastion Elementary is very pleased to be participating in and supporting three very important upcoming events…

The Dancers of Damelhamid will be performing at our school on Wednesday, September 26th.  The performance will begin at 8:40 am and family members are welcome to attend.  The Dancers of Damelahamid are an inter-generational Indigenous dance company from the Northwest Coast of BC. They share song, story and dance that reflects the richness of their ancestry. They have performed in New Zealand, Australia, China, Germany, Peru, Ecuador, across Canada and throughout BC. Their mandate is to revive their heritage for future generations and to foster cross-cultural acceptance and understanding of the richness of Indigenous arts and culture.

 

The Terry Fox National School Run will be held on Thursday, September 27th.  Our students will continue where Terry Fox left off, by participating in a run and by making donations to The Terry Fox Foundation.  We are encouraging each student and staff member to bring in a Toonie for Terry.  Families are welcome to join us for the run!  The run will begin at 11:15 am, on the upper soccer field.

Our final event of the week will be Orange Shirt Day on Friday, September 28th.  Orange Shirt Day grew out of Phyllis’ story of having her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school at a residential school, and it has become an opportunity to keep the discussion on all aspects of residential schools happening annually.

The date was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools, and because it is an opportunity to set the stage for anti-racism and anti-bullying policies for the coming school year.  It also gives teachers time to plan events that will include children, as we want to ensure that we are passing the story and learning on to the next generations.

Orange Shirt Day is also an opportunity for First Nations, local governments, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come.

Please feel free to stop by the school, with your children, on Thursday, September 13th.  Classrooms will be open between 6:00 – 7:00 pm, so your son/daughter can introduce you to his/her teacher and show you around the classroom.

Following the Meet the Teacher event, the PAC executive will be hosting the first PAC meeting of the school year.  Please join us at 7:00 pm to learn all about the wonderful things our PAC does to support our learning community.
